Many people are blind to the advantages of being a restaurant server. Usually, they accept the myth that servers are "stuck" in the service industry, or they see it as too risky or unstable of a job choice, or they may even believe servers are always working when other people are having fun. In reality, none of these things could be further from the truth. Being a restaurant server is one of the only jobs that allows you to choose where you want to work and for how long.
The tourism industry in the USA is booming and the restaurant industry is expanding right along with it. Servers usually get at least twice the free time as other professions. Imagine spending your winters in Hawaii, Orlando, or the Virgin Islands, your summers in Chicago, New York, or even Alaska, and with plenty of time to travel or visit home in between. Servers who know what they're doing choose where they live and for how long, moving around all over the country, strategically living in the best places at the best times, they have friends and connections all over the world, they eat great food, enjoy active, low-stress lifestyles, and almost never wait in line or sit in rush hour traffic. They often make an amazingly high relative income and they enjoy more free time and flexibility than most people can dream of.
If you Google "lowest paying jobs in America", you'll find restaurant serving comes in at #16, just below parking lot attendants and nannies. They list the average annual income at around $20,000, which sounds about right for the typical server who stays at the same restaurant all year long. But the servers that have mastered the art of being at the right place at the right time, and are really good at what they do, easily make twice that amount. These "rockstar" servers would be better placed at around #300 above city workers, tax preparers, and professional models, they work much less (excluding the models of course), and not to mention usually eat for free or half-price (admit it, this saves you a ton of money). Plus, once you have the resume, knowledge, and confidence you need to succeed you will find job openings everywhere. Job stability won't even enter your head as you will be too busy weighing your options about all the great places you can go and work.
